We must do better!!! Details Edit. Release date April 18, Mexico. United Kingdom Mexico. Official Facebook Official site. English Spanish. Who Is Dayani Cristal? Box office Edit. Who Is Dayani Cristal? Once his name becomes known, the film does an investigation of its own, tracing his story from his native Honduras to the United States. The story of the migrant, Yohan Sandros Martinez, is made visceral by a recreation of his day journey to pave the way north for his wife and three children, with Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal in his role.

Wearing a red baseball cap, he travels on the roof of a train, in the back of a van, and, finally, by walking across a desert. His journey is perilous, with frequent physical danger and the looming threat of gangs. But he also sees the gentler side of human nature, getting help and companionship from fellow migrants every step of the way. Interviews with the Martinez family give the viewer a sense of his personality.

His wife describes their courtship, and his brother takes the director to a hot spring where he often used to cook chicken. Footage from his hometown in Honduras also shows why he was drawn north; one shot shows a set of piglets sucking the teats of their emaciated mother. The story has a lot of emotion inherent in it, of course, but the director adds sentimental flourishes to make them more vivid.

In an acted scene in which Martinez learns to climb to the roof of a moving train, loud, clanging industrial sounds jar the audience. In between the acted segments, the film adds context by including interviews with activists and government officials. Martinez is one of an average of migrants found dead per year in southern Arizona, a number that began spiraling upwards around the turn of the century. Through a novel combination of investigation and quasi-reenactment, Marc Silver and Gael Garcia Bernal have found a haunting way of telling their story that respects its particulars while illuminating the ways in which the story is far too common. It should be required viewing for anyone involved in making or enforcing border policy, not to mention the blowhards who have made a cottage industry out of debating it. Instead, the picture is so cohesive it belies what must have been an agonizing wait-and-see production.

Following this cadaver back to the morgue, the film meets the people — from local medical examiners to employees of foreign consulates — who spend their days trying to find names for corpses.
